AgentGPT — Autonomous AI Agent in Your Browser

AgentGPT lets you deploy autonomous AI agents directly in a web browser. Give it a goal and it will create tasks, execute them, and iterate until the objective is reached.

Introduction

AgentGPT is a browser-based platform for assembling and deploying autonomous AI agents. Unlike CLI-only agent tools, it provides a polished web UI where users define a goal in natural language and watch the agent decompose it into tasks, execute each step, and refine results in a loop.

What AgentGPT Does

  • Accepts a high-level goal and autonomously breaks it into subtasks
  • Executes tasks sequentially, feeding outputs from one step into the next
  • Runs entirely in the browser with a React frontend and Next.js backend
  • Supports multiple LLM providers including OpenAI and open-source models
  • Allows saving, sharing, and replaying agent runs

Architecture Overview

AgentGPT follows a Next.js full-stack architecture. The frontend presents a chat-like interface where agents stream their reasoning. The backend orchestrates a task loop: it sends the current goal and completed steps to the LLM, parses the response into new tasks, and continues until the agent determines the goal is met or a maximum iteration count is reached. Prisma handles database persistence for user sessions and saved agents.

Self-Hosting & Configuration

  • Clone the repo and run the setup script, which provisions Docker containers for the app, database, and backend
  • Set OPENAI_API_KEY in the .env file for the default provider
  • Configure NEXT_PUBLIC_BACKEND_URL if hosting the backend on a separate machine
  • PostgreSQL is used for persistence; connection details go in DATABASE_URL
  • Optional: connect alternative LLM endpoints by updating the provider configuration

Key Features

  • No-code agent creation through a clean web interface
  • Real-time task streaming shows agent reasoning as it works
  • Agent templates for common goals like research, coding, and analysis
  • Session persistence lets you pause and resume agent runs
  • Open-source and self-hostable with full control over data

Comparison with Similar Tools

  • AutoGPT — CLI-first with plugin ecosystem; steeper setup curve
  • BabyAGI — minimal task-driven agent; no built-in UI
  • CrewAI — focuses on multi-agent role orchestration rather than single-agent loops
  • SuperAGI — more infrastructure-heavy with marketplace; heavier deployment

FAQ

Q: Which LLMs does AgentGPT support? A: It supports OpenAI models by default. You can configure alternative providers by modifying the backend LLM configuration.

Q: Is there a hosted version? A: The project previously offered a hosted demo at agentgpt.reworkd.ai. Check the repository README for current availability.

Q: How do I limit agent iterations? A: Set the maximum loop count in the settings panel or via the MAX_LOOPS environment variable to prevent runaway execution.

Q: Can agents access the internet? A: Agents can use web search tools when configured, but by default they rely on the LLM's knowledge without live browsing.
