It builds a glossary strictly from a passage you paste, quoting the passage for every term instead of relying on outside knowledge. **What to paste** 1. Paste the full prompt text (appended to this page) into the chat. 2. Then paste the passage you want explained. If it is long, paste one coherent section and label which section it is. 3. Optionally add your reading level or goal, such as "high-school biology student", and any terms you already know and want skipped. If you send the prompt without a passage, the assistant should stop and ask for one rather than inventing text. **Where to paste it**: any general chat assistant that accepts a block of text. No terminal, account setup beyond the chat itself, or API key is needed. **How to check the output** - Every Evidence cell should be a verbatim quote; if a term has no quote, it belongs under "Uncertain or missing". - Definitions should not add facts, numbers or names that are not in your passage. - Each self-check answer should trace back to a quoted line. - Terms appear once, and paraphrases are clearly not quotations. ## Introduction Unfamiliar readings are often hardest at the vocabulary level: a few specialized terms carry the meaning, and generic definitions can drift away from how the text actually uses them. This prompt keeps everything anchored to the passage. It marks terms the passage only mentions but never explains, lists them under a dedicated uncertainty section, and closes with a short self-check quiz whose answers cite supporting quotes. It is a study aid made from text you supply, not a textbook check or a translation. ## Permissions and limitations - **Permissions**: you need a text-accepting chat assistant and a passage you have the right to paste. Do not paste confidential, personal or copyrighted text you are not allowed to share. - **Limitations**: output is only as good as the passage; the assistant does not verify against textbooks or the web. It is not a graded-exam coach, does not translate, and adds no pronunciation or etymology unless the passage contains it. - Additions from other sources should be marked as such only if you explicitly ask for them. ## FAQ **What if I forget to paste the passage?** The assistant should stop and ask for it instead of guessing; if it does produce output anyway, discard it and resend with the passage. **Can I use a single section of a long article?** Yes, if you label which section it is, so the snapshot and quotes stay meaningful. ## Verification note source reviewed; runtime not tested. Your job is to build a glossary that is grounded in the passage the user supplies. Work only from that passage. Do not use outside knowledge to add terms or to give a definition the passage does not support. A term that the passage uses without explaining it should be listed under Uncertain — not guessed. INPUT YOU NEED FROM THE USER 1. The passage (paste the full text). If it is very long, the user may paste one coherent section and must label which section it is. 2. Reading level or goal (optional): e.g. "high-school biology student" or "just want the gist". If not given, assume an interested general reader. 3. Any terms the user already knows and wants skipped (optional). If the passage is missing or empty, stop and ask for it. Do not invent a passage. WHAT COUNTS AS A TERM - A word or short phrase whose meaning is important for understanding the passage, and that a reader at the stated level might not know. - Prefer domain terms, acronyms spelled out in the passage, and words used in a specialized way. - Skip everyday words, proper names of people/places, and numbers unless the passage gives them special meaning. - Keep the list focused: aim for the terms the passage actually depends on, not every long word. FOR EACH TERM, PRODUCE: - Term exactly as it appears in the passage. - Evidence: quote the shortest phrase or sentence from the passage that shows the term in use (verbatim, in quotes). - Meaning: 1-2 plain sentences, in the user's reading level. If the passage defines it, follow that definition. If the passage implies it through context, say "implied by context" and explain. - In-passage example: paraphrase (not quote) one situation the passage associates with the term, or write "none given in passage". - Related terms: link to other glossary entries only when the passage connects them. UNCERTAINTY HANDLING (required) Create a section called "Uncertain or missing". For each item, say what is unclear and what would resolve it. Put a term here rather than guessing when: the passage mentions it but never explains or exemplifies it; two readings of a sentence are both possible; or the spelling/sense looks unusual. Never silently fill a gap with general knowledge. OUTPUT FORMAT Use Markdown with these sections, in order: 1. Passage snapshot: 2-3 sentences summarizing what the passage is about, using only the passage. 2. Glossary table: columns Term | Evidence (quoted) | Meaning | In-passage example. 3. Uncertain or missing: bullet list. 4. Self-check: 5 questions answerable only from the passage, mixing "define in your own words" and "what does this sentence mean". Put the answers in a short key at the very end, each with the quote that supports it. CHECKS TO RUN BEFORE RETURNING - Every Evidence cell is a verbatim quote from the passage. If you cannot quote it, the term goes to Uncertain. - No definition introduces a fact, number, or name not present in the passage. - Every self-check answer can be traced to a quote, and the key cites it. - Terms are listed once; no duplicates from plural/singular variants. - The paraphrase in In-passage example is clearly not a quotation. If any check fails, fix it or move the item to Uncertain. BOUNDARIES - You are preparing a study aid from text the user gave you. You are not verifying it against textbooks or the web, not translating it, and not telling the user what to memorize for a graded exam. - Do not add pronunciation, etymology, or "did you know" extras unless the passage itself contains them. - If the user asks later to check answers, grade only against the passage and flag where the passage is silent. - State at the top: "Grounded only in the passage you supplied; additions from other sources are marked as such if the user asks for them." WORKED EXAMPLE (fictional, for shape only) Input: a two-paragraph passage about how a "watershed" collects rain and how "runoff" carries soil into a stream. The passage defines watershed but only mentions runoff once. Expected output shape: Glossary lists Watershed (quote + definition matching the passage + paraphrased example) and Runoff (quote + "implied by context" note). Uncertain or missing notes that runoff is not defined and suggests re-reading the sentence or checking a teacher's note. Self-check key cites the defining quote for watershed and marks the runoff question as "passage does not define this". Now ask the user for the passage if it was not provided, then produce the glossary. ## References and reuse - [ChatGPT release notes](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes) · Reviewed 2026-10-04 Original TokRepo prompt · [CC BY 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).
