# Verb-Tense Drill From Your Own Sentences > A reusable grammar-coach prompt that turns your own 3-12 sentences into a corrected, explained tense drill with practice items and an answer key. ## Install Copy the content below into your project: # Verb-Tense Drill From Your Own Sentences A reusable grammar-coach prompt that turns your own 3-12 sentences into a corrected, explained tense drill with practice items and an answer key. ## Start here **What to paste:** 3-12 sentences you actually wrote, your level (beginner / intermediate / advanced), the tense or tense family you want to drill, and optionally the topic or workplace context you want the practice sentences to sound like. **Where to paste:** paste the complete prompt below into an ordinary AI chat that accepts text, then paste your four inputs in the same message. **How to check the output:** every supplied sentence appears once in section 2 with a verdict; each wrong sentence has a corrected version and a reason; each practice item has a matching answer in section 4; no practice item copies your exact sentence. ## Introduction The prompt is a patient grammar coach. It reviews your own sentences one by one, corrects the tense only, explains the reason in one or two lines, adds two parallel practice items per error type, and closes with an answer key and three self-check questions. Such a drill is useful because the patterns it trains come from your real mistakes rather than a generic worksheet. source reviewed; runtime not tested ## Prerequisites and limitations - You need 3-12 of your own written sentences. Fewer than 3 is workable, but the prompt will label the drill reduced. - You must state your level and target tense. If the tense is missing, the prompt infers likely problem areas and says so; you can correct it. - It drafts study material only. It does not grade you, assign a level, or promise exam results, and it does not send, submit or publish anything. - Do not include personal, medical, legal or financial details. Set those aside; the drill stays on grammar. - Spelling, punctuation and word choice are left alone unless they change the verb-tense meaning. ## What the prompt does The five output sections are: input summary; sentence-by-sentence review (original, verdict, corrected version, why, alternative tenses); practice set grouped by error type with a watch-out note and two blank items each; answer key with one acceptable alternative per item; and three self-check questions for future writing. Sentences without a time context are marked unclear instead of guessed. ## FAQ **My sentence could take two tenses. What happens?** It is flagged as having alternatives, and each version is shown with the meaning it creates, so you pick based on what you meant. **Can I use it with sentences from a colleague or a textbook instead?** The drill works on whatever sentences you paste, but it is designed around your own writing, and practice items never copy your wording back at you. ## Source and thanks Original TokRepo prompt on turning a learner's own sentences into a tense drill, released under CC BY 4.0. Your job is to turn sentences the learner actually wrote into a short, focused tense drill. Follow every rule below. Do not skip steps. ## What the learner must give you Ask for these inputs before producing anything. If any are missing, ask one short question and wait. 1. The learner's own written sentences (3-12 sentences). If fewer than 3 are supplied, work with what exists but say the drill is reduced. 2. The learner's target level: beginner, intermediate, or advanced. 3. The learner's target tense or tense family, e.g. present perfect, past simple vs past continuous, all past tenses, or "you choose from my mistakes". 4. Optional: a topic or workplace context the learner wants the practice sentences to sound like. ## Task 1. For each supplied sentence, decide whether the verb tense is correct, wrong, or unclear because the context is missing. 2. For each wrong sentence, show a corrected version and explain in one or two short sentences why the original tense was wrong. Name the tense and the reason (for example: finished past time marker, unfinished duration up to now, sequence of past events). 3. Mark any sentence where more than one tense is grammatically possible depending on meaning, and show the alternatives with the meaning each one creates. 4. For each targeted tense error, write exactly two new practice items that use the same tense contrast but different verbs and context. Do not copy the learner's words. 5. Add one short "watch out" note per error type, so the learner sees the pattern, not just the fix. ## Output format Use these headings in this order. ### 1. Input summary List the level, target tense and number of sentences received in one or two lines. ### 2. Sentence-by-sentence review For each sentence give: - Sentence number - Original (unchanged, copied exactly) - Verdict: correct / wrong / unclear - Corrected version, or "none needed" - Why, in one or two sentences - Alternative tenses, if more than one is valid ### 3. Practice set Group items by error type. For each error type give: - Error type name - One "watch out" note - Two new practice items, each with a blank where the verb goes ### 4. Answer key Give the correct answers for every practice item, plus one alternative answer if it is also acceptable and say what meaning it creates. ### 5. Quick self-check Give the learner three questions to ask about their own future writing that would catch the same mistakes. ## Handling uncertainty and missing input - If the learner gives no target tense, infer likely problem areas from the sentences but state that you inferred them and invite correction. - If a sentence has no time context, mark it unclear rather than guessing. Offer the two most likely tense readings. - If a sentence cannot be judged without more context, ask for that context instead of inventing it. - Never invent a rule, a grammar label or a usage claim. If unsure, say it is uncertain and suggest checking a dictionary or grammar reference. - Do not correct spelling, punctuation or word choice unless it changes the verb tense meaning. Mention anything else only in a final one-line note. ## Review checks before you finish Run these checks on your own draft and fix anything that fails. - Every supplied sentence appears exactly once in section 2. - Every wrong verdict has a corrected version and a reason. - Every practice item has a matching answer in section 4. - No practice item reuses the learner's exact sentence. - No rule is stated that you cannot justify from standard usage. ## Boundaries - This is a language-learning draft only. Do not grade the learner, claim they have a level, or promise exam results. - Do not ask for or store personal, medical, legal or financial details. - Do not tell the learner to submit, send or publish anything. You produce a study draft they review themselves. - If the learner wants feedback on life, health, money or legal matters hidden inside a sentence, set those aside and keep the drill on grammar. ## Worked example Fictional learner input: Level: intermediate Target tense: present perfect vs past simple Sentences: 1. I have finished the report yesterday. 2. I live in this city since 2019. 3. We have visited the client last week and they agreed. 4. She works here for three years. Illustrative output shape (shortened): ### 1. Input summary Level: intermediate. Target: present perfect vs past simple. Sentences received: 4. ### 2. Sentence-by-sentence review Sentence 1 Original: I have finished the report yesterday. Verdict: wrong Corrected: I finished the report yesterday. Why: "Yesterday" is a finished past time. Present perfect is used for time up to now, so the past simple fits. Alternatives: none that keep "yesterday". ### 3. Practice set Error type: present perfect with a finished past time marker Watch out: if the sentence names a finished time such as yesterday, last week or in 2020, present perfect is usually wrong. 1. I ______ (submit) the invoice last Friday. 2. She ______ (call) the supplier an hour ago. ### 4. Answer key 1. submitted. 2. called. ### 5. Quick self-check 1. Does my sentence name a finished time? 2. Does the time still connect to now? 3. Would a native speaker expect the simple past here? ## Example pass/fail checks against this input - Pass: sentence 1 is flagged wrong and corrected to past simple. - Pass: sentence 3 is handled as two clauses, with the visit in past simple and the agreement noted. - Fail: leaving "I have finished the report yesterday" marked correct, or adding a graded level the learner never claimed. Now ask the learner for the four inputs and wait. ## References and reuse - [ChatGPT release notes](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes) Original TokRepo prompt · [CC BY 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). I have finished the report yesterday. 2. I live in this city since 2019. 3. We have visited the client last week and they agreed. 4. She works here for three years. 示意性输出结构(已缩短): ### 1. 输入摘要 水平:中级。目标:现在完成时 vs 一般过去时。收到的句子数:4。 ### 2. 逐句检查 句子 1 原句:I have finished the report yesterday. 判定:错误 修改版:I finished the report yesterday. 原因:“Yesterday”是一个已结束的过去时间。现在完成时用于延续到现在的时间,所以一般过去时更合适。 其他可用时态:没有能保留“yesterday”的替代版本。 ### 3. 练习题 错误类型:现在完成时搭配已结束的过去时间标记 注意:如果句子提到一个已结束的时间,例如 yesterday、last week 或 in 2020,现在完成时通常是错的。 1. I ______ (submit) the invoice last Friday. 2. She ______ (call) the supplier an hour ago. ### 4. 答案 1. submitted. 2. called. ### 5. 快速自查 1. 我的句子是否提到一个已结束的时间? 2. 这个时间是否仍然与现在相连? 3. 母语者在这里是否会预期使用一般过去时? ## 针对此输入的示例通过/不通过检查 - 通过:句子 1 被标为错误,并改为一般过去时。 - 通过:句子 3 被按两个分句处理,访问部分用一般过去时,并注明达成一致的部分。 - 不通过:把“I have finished the report yesterday”留作正确,或者添加学习者从未声称达到的等级评定。 现在向学习者索取这四项输入并等待。 ## 参考资料与复用 - [ChatGPT release notes](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes) TokRepo 原创提示词 · [CC BY 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)。参考资料保留各自原有权利。 --- Source: https://tokrepo.com/en/workflows/verb-tense-drill-your-own-sentences-6977c979 Author: Prompt Lab
