React Bootstrap — Bootstrap Components Rebuilt as React Components

A complete re-implementation of Bootstrap components as true React components, replacing jQuery plugins with React state management while keeping the familiar Bootstrap look and feel.

Introduction

React Bootstrap replaces the Bootstrap JavaScript with proper React components. Instead of manipulating the DOM with jQuery, each component manages its own state through React, giving you the familiar Bootstrap design language with the predictability and composability of the React component model.

What React Bootstrap Does

  • Provides React component wrappers for every Bootstrap UI element including modals, carousels, and navbars
  • Manages component state and DOM interactions through React instead of jQuery or vanilla JS
  • Supports controlled and uncontrolled component patterns for forms, accordions, and overlays
  • Works with Bootstrap's CSS without modification — just import the stylesheet
  • Exposes a ref-forwarding API for integrating with other React libraries and testing tools

Architecture Overview

React Bootstrap re-implements each Bootstrap JavaScript plugin as a React component using hooks and refs. The library does not bundle Bootstrap's CSS — you import the standard Bootstrap stylesheet separately. This separation means you can upgrade Bootstrap CSS independently. Overlay components use React Portals and Floating UI for positioning. The codebase is written in TypeScript with full type exports.

Self-Hosting & Configuration

  • Install both react-bootstrap and bootstrap packages via npm or yarn
  • Import Bootstrap CSS in your entry file: import "bootstrap/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css";
  • Import components individually for tree-shaking: import Button from "react-bootstrap/Button";
  • Customize Bootstrap's theme by importing your own Sass overrides instead of the compiled CSS
  • Use the <ThemeProvider> component to set global prefixes or breakpoint values

Key Features

  • True React components with proper lifecycle management and no jQuery dependency
  • Full TypeScript support with typed props for every component
  • Accessible by default with ARIA attributes and keyboard handling inherited from Bootstrap's patterns
  • Controlled and uncontrolled modes for stateful components like Accordion, Tabs, and Modal
  • Drop-in replacement for Bootstrap's JS plugins without changing your existing Bootstrap CSS

Comparison with Similar Tools

  • Bootstrap (vanilla) — uses its own JavaScript plugins; not idiomatic React
  • Material UI — React-native components with Material Design; different visual language
  • Reactstrap — another React Bootstrap wrapper; smaller community and slower updates
  • Ant Design — complete React component library with its own design system; heavier
  • Chakra UI — styled React components with a hooks-first API; not Bootstrap-compatible

FAQ

Q: Do I still need Bootstrap CSS with React Bootstrap? A: Yes. React Bootstrap provides only the JavaScript components. You must import Bootstrap's CSS separately for styling.

Q: Can I use React Bootstrap with Next.js? A: Yes. React Bootstrap works with Next.js. Import the Bootstrap CSS in your _app.js or layout file and use components as normal.

Q: Does React Bootstrap support Bootstrap 5? A: Yes. React Bootstrap v2+ is built for Bootstrap 5 and does not require jQuery.

Q: How do I customize the theme? A: Override Bootstrap Sass variables in a custom stylesheet and import it instead of the default compiled CSS. React Bootstrap will reflect those changes automatically.
