PixiJS is not a game framework with physics and audio. It is a rendering engine. You use PixiJS for the visual layer and add game logic, physics, and audio from other libraries.

PixiJS abstracts the complexity of WebGL/WebGPU programming into a simple display-list API. Creating sprites, applying filters, and compositing layers takes a few lines of JavaScript instead of hundreds of lines of shader code.

Common pitfalls

  • Using DOM elements for game UI instead of PixiJS text and containers. Mixing DOM and WebGL creates performance issues. Use PixiJS's built-in text and UI primitives for in-canvas interfaces.
  • Not using sprite sheets for multiple small images. Loading individual image files is slow. Use texture atlases to batch sprites into a single GPU texture.
  • Forgetting to destroy textures and containers when removing them. WebGL resources leak if not explicitly cleaned up. Call destroy() on removed display objects.
